What is the MLB World Series?

The MLB World Series is the grand finale of the Major League Baseball season. It’s a best-of-seven-game series, where the champions of the American League (AL) and National League (NL) go head-to-head in an end-of-season showdown. This annual Fall Classic is held in October every year after the end of the regular season.

How Did the MLB Start?

Major League Baseball began in the late 19th century. In 1876, the National League (NL) was founded, followed by the American League (AL) in 1901. The two leagues operated separately until 1903 when they agreed to a championship series, leading to the birth of the World Series. Since then, MLB has expanded, evolved, and become a cornerstone of American sports culture.

MLB World Series Winners List

Among the MLB winners since 1903 are underdogs who have taken on some of baseball’s best-ever teams. In addition, some of the most well-known dynasties of baseball history have dominated the Fall Classic for several years.

Each win for the franchises below has marked a special occasion where they have held the spotlight on baseball’s biggest stage.

New York Yankees – 27 Titles

The New York Yankees are the undisputed kings of the World Series, securing a record 27 championships.

Their dominance began in the 1920s with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig leading the charge. Iconic moments include Reggie Jackson’s three-homer game in 1977 and Derek Jeter’s clutch performances in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

But the Yankees have fallen on a long barren streak, with their last title coming back in 2009 when they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies.

St. Louis Cardinals – 11 Titles

The St. Louis Cardinals are the most successful National League team in World Series history, winning 11 titles. The Cardinals lifted their first championship title back in 1926 when they were led by legendary pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander.

The Redbirds’ most recent triumph was in 2011, featuring one of the most dramatic Game 6 comebacks ever, thanks to David Freese’s heroics against the Texas Rangers.

Boston Red Sox – 9 Titles

The Boston Red Sox were one of the MLB World Series’ early leaders, securing four titles between 1912 and 1918.

After an 86-year drought famously dubbed the “Curse of the Bambino”, the Red Sox finally got their name on the MLB winners’ list again in 2004, sweeping past the St. Louis Cardinals. Since then, the Red Sox added further titles in 2007, 2013, and 2018.

Oakland Athletics – 9 Titles

The Oakland Athletics, originally based in Philadelphia before moving to Oakland, dominated the early 1970s with three consecutive championships (1972-74), led by Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter. The A’s last won in 1989, sweeping the Giants that came during the franchises’ internationally renowned “Moneyball” era.

Los Angeles Dodgers – 8 Titles

The LA Dodgers won their first World Series title in 1955, finally beating the Yankees after losing five previous Fall Classics.

More recently, they have enjoyed great World Series success and captured championships in 2020 and 2024. Clayton Kershaw, Sandy Koufax, and Jackie Robinson are just a few of the all-time greats associated with the franchise.

San Francisco Giants – 8 Titles

Originally the New York Giants before relocating to San Francisco, the team has secured eight championships. Their modern dynasty saw them win three titles in five years (2010, 2012, 2014), thanks to the likes of Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner.

Cincinnati Reds – 5 Titles

The Big Red Machine dominated the 1970s, winning back-to-back titles in 1975 and 1976 behind Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, and Pete Rose. The Reds also won in 1919, 1940, and 1990, with their last title being a wire-to-wire sweep of the Oakland Athletics.

Pittsburgh Pirates – 5 Titles

The Pittsburgh Pirates made history as one of the first teams to play in the opening World Series in 1903. Despite losing to the Boston Americans, Pittsburgh went on to win five further championships, with their last in 1979.

Detroit Tigers – 4 Titles

The Tigers have captured four World Series titles, with their most recent coming in 1984 under Hall of Famer Alan Trammell. Detroit’s storied history also includes championships in 1935, 1945, and 1968, when Denny McLain’s pitching and Mickey Lolich’s clutch performances led them past the St. Louis Cardinals.

Atlanta Braves – 4 Titles

The Braves, one of baseball’s oldest franchises, have won four World Series championships. Their most recent title came in 2021, breaking a 26-year drought. They also won in 1995, 1957 (as the Milwaukee Braves), and 1914 (as the Boston Braves), showcasing their success across different eras and cities.

Chicago Cubs – 3 Titles

The Cubs ended the most infamous championship drought in sports history in 2016, winning their first World Series since 1908. Their dramatic Game 7 victory over Cleveland in extra innings was one for the ages. The team also won in 1907, making their return to the top after 108 years all the more special.

Chicago White Sox – 3 Titles

The White Sox broke their own long championship drought in 2005, sweeping the Houston Astros for their first title since 1917. The team also won in 1906, making their most recent victory a significant milestone after nearly nine decades of waiting.

Minnesota Twins – 3 Titles

The Twins won their first World Series in 1924 as the Washington Senators before relocating to Minnesota. They claimed two more titles, winning Game 7 thrillers in 1987 and 1991, with Kirby Puckett’s heroics cementing his place as a franchise legend.

Baltimore Orioles – 3 Titles

The Orioles’ golden era came between 1966 and 1983, capturing three World Series titles. Led by legendary players like Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, and Cal Ripken Jr., Baltimore’s last championship came in 1983 when they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in five games.

Teams That Have Never Won the MLB World Series

While most teams have experienced the thrill of a championship, a few franchises are still chasing their first World Series title. With the Texas Rangers finally winning in 2023, only five teams remain without a championship.

  • Colorado Rockies
  • Milwaukee Brewers
  • San Diego Padres
  • Seattle Mariners
  • Tampa Bay Rays
